Local Area

Located at an elevation of 7,936 feet, Fort Garland is known as the Gateway to the San Luis Valley as it's the first town you reach after La Veta Pass on Highway 160. Positioned on the eastern border of the San Luis Valley in south-central Colorado, this town in Costilla County lies at the southern tip of the Sangre de Cristo Mountain range. Like many other communities in the San Luis Valley, Fort Garland attracts a diverse range of creative individuals, from artists and painters to craftsmen and musicians. The Blanca/Fort Garland Community Center welcomes both locals and tourists year-round, offering daily, monthly, and annual passes for purchase. For information on the top attractions in the San Luis Valley, including the UFO Watchtower, Gator Farm, and the Sand Dunes, visitors can head to the Entrada Visitor Center. Fort Garland, established in 1858, was constructed to address conflicts between white settlers and the Utes residing in the San Luis Valley. Volunteers from New Mexico, led by Colonel Kit Carson, were stationed at the fort and successfully negotiated a treaty with the Utes in 1867. However, nearly a decade later, tensions persisted, leading to the Ninth Cavalry's intervention to prevent further escalation. Ultimately, this group facilitated the relocation of white settlers from Ute territory.

Area Attractions

Sangre de Cristo Mountains

The mountains are one of the longest ranges in the world and are comprised of ten peaks with an elevation of at least 14,000 feet. The range stretches from Poncha Pass in central Colorado to Glorieta Pass southeast of Sante Fe, New Mexico. The mighty peaks are covered by San Isabel, Rio Grande, Carsen, and Santa Fe National Forests. Elk and bighorn sheep roam the mountains making them a popular hunting destination. Fishermen delight in the alpine lakes, streams, and rivers. The Sangres offer some of the world s best rock climbing, downhill, skiing, and white-water rafting. Twenty-seven million years ago, one big chunk of rock was pushed up forming the astounding range we see today.

Mountain Home Reservoir

This reservoir is ten minutes south of Fort Garland and is a serene spot to fish with gorgeous surrounding scenery.

Smith Reservoir SWA

A short drive west to Smith Reservoir SWA leads you to a high-elevation lake with over 14,000 square feet of water to explore. Anglers can catch many types of trout from the shoreline or a boat.

Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve

With no designated trails and 30 square miles of sand, the Sand Dunes are the ultimate adventure headquarters. Sandboarding and sand-sledding are popular as well as renting off-roading vehicles to take on the spectacular mountains of sand!

The Fort Garland Museum and Cultural Center

The Fort Garland Museum and Cultural Center is located within the historic Fort Garland, which dates back to the nineteenth century. Positioned as the initial town encountered after traversing La Veta Pass on Highway 160, it is often referred to as "the gateway to the San Luis Valley." Guests exploring the fort have the opportunity to delve into the daily life of its former inhabitants. They can wander through the parade grounds and explore five of the authentic adobe structures, including a meticulously recreated rendition of the commandant's quarters dating back to the 1860s.

Los Caminos Antiguos Byway

The historic Los Caminos Antiguos, translating to "The Ancient Roads," offers travelers a glimpse into the past, allowing them to traverse the realms of Spanish explorers and Native Americans. This region was once home to ancient Indian communities and later occupied by Spanish conquistadors during the 16th century. Spanning approximately 129 miles, this picturesque byway meanders through some of Colorado's oldest towns, including Alamosa and Antonito. Completing the route typically takes 3 to 4 hours, showcasing a diverse array of landscapes, from snow-capped mountains to vast ranchlands and shifting sand dunes.
